Peggy Walker to be Honored by Holy Rosary Community in Donelson

Holy Rosary Service in Action Award - Ms Peggy Walker

Former School Principal and Longtime Community Organizer will Receive Award at Fall Festival Event on October 21st

Peggy Walker, an educator, entrepreneur and prominent leader of the Donelson-Hermitage community for decades, will receive the “Holy Rosary Service in Action Award” on October 21. The communities of Holy Rosary Parish, Holy Rosary Academy, and the Knights of Columbus, #4972 have chosen to honor Ms. Walker in recognition of her decades-long service to the Holy Rosary community as an educator and administrator as well as her dedication to the wider Donelson-Hermitage area through her service to the Chamber of Commerce and the Stones River Women's Club.

Ms. Walker will be presented with the award and recognized at the newly re-dedicated Holy Rosary Fall Festival to be held at the Church and Academy campus at 190 Graylynn Dr in the heart of Donelson on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

The larger festival will celebrate the collective work done by the Church, School and the Knights and serve to elevate the profile of the Holy Rosary community among the wider community of Donelson-Hermitage and Nashville. The day will feature food, fun, and entertainment for the whole family and a highlight of the day will be the public recognition of Ms. Walker in the afternoon.

The award presentation will be preceded and followed followed by live music, and other entertainment from community groups including students from Holy Rosary Academy. The Fall Festival will also include food and drink provided by the Knights of Columbus; a market bazaar featuring unique products and services from over 50 local vendors; a silent auction of items provided by Nashville individuals and businesses; and inflatables, carnival games, face painting and other fun activities for children.

Holy Rosary Parish was founded in 1954 by a small group of families who took very seriously the obligation to share God’s love in word and deed. Since then, the community has been a faith home for thousands of families. Over the decades, the membership has built and maintained a facility that has educated thousands of children both through Holy Rosary Academy and the church’s CCD programs and ushered them into adulthood with a strong foundation of faith. The charitable works performed by this community over the years in service to their neighbors in Donelson would prove too many to count.

Ms. Walker served as the ninth principal of Holy Rosary Academy from 1996 to 2007 and was a classroom teacher before that beginning in 1978. Since then, she has worked as a tireless promoter of the Donelson-Hermitage community, its citizens and its local businesses and non-profit enterprises.

Peter Rodgers, the current Principal at Holy Rosary Academy since 2016 considers the honoring of one of his predecessors particularly gratifying. “Peggy Walker made it her singular mission for so many years to shape and mold young minds and hearts and it’s important to offer thanks and recognition for those efforts.” Adds Rodgers: “We are so excited to welcome her back to our community home and call further attention to her life’s work.”

Fr. Dan Steiner, the newly appointed pastor of Holy Rosary Parish echoes Rodgers’ sentiment: “We should all be deeply grateful for the ongoing support of those like Ms. Walker who work every day to advance the Catholic tradition of evangelization, education and service to others.” Steiner was recently installed as pastor by Bishop Mark Spalding of the Catholic Diocese of Nashville in a special ceremony at Holy Rosary on August 25. Reflecting on the recent transitions in his community, Fr. Steiner offered one final thought: “It’s wonderful to have a reinvigorated Fall Festival serve as the backdrop for the honoring of such a significant figure from our community’s history.”

The 2018 Fall Festival is made possible through the generous support of several local businesses and organizations including: Oxford Orthodontics; Father Ryan High School; JPC Construction and JPC Components; Homegrown Taproom & Marketplace; Party Fowl; Donelson Auto Clinic, Robinson Properties, J&J Printers and Donelson Hot Yoga.
